"Lucky You" Poker Movie

By: Murphy James

“Lucky You,” the new poker movie starring Australian actor, Eric Bana (“Munich”) and Hollywood vet, Robert Duvall, in a father-son rivalry is – after several delays – now on the boards for a mid-March 2007 release date. Let’s hope they stick with this one.

Here’s the official version, from Warner Brothers: “Huck Cheever (Eric Bana) is a blaster—a player who goes all out, all the time. But in his personal relationships, Huck plays it tight, expertly avoiding emotional commitments and long-term expectations. When Huck sets out to win the main event of the 2003 World Series of Poker—and the affections of Billie Offer (Drew Barrymore), a young singer from Bakersfield—there is one significant obstacle in his path: his father, L.C. Cheever (Robert Duvall), the poker legend who abandoned Huck's mother years ago. As these two rivals progress toward a final showdown at the poker table, Huck learns that to win in the games of life and poker, he must try to play cards the way he has been living his life and live his life the way he has been playing cards.”

This one should be fun for fans of the big televised poker tournaments as many stars play themselves in the flick. Look for “The Godfather” of poker, Doyle Brunson, Daniel “Kid Poker,” Negreanu, Chris “Jesus” Ferguson, Jennifer Harman, John Juanda, and Mike “The Mouth” Matusow in cameo roles. Matt Savage, former World Series of Poker Tournament Director, also takes an acting turn as Gil Edwards.

Warner Brothers recreated the Bellagio poker room on a Hollywood set. The pros were amazed at the attention to detail and felt right at home in their home away from home.

Academy Award winning director Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential, Wonder Boys, 8 Mile) directed the movie. It was produced Carol Fenelon (In Her Shoes, 8 Mile). Other top actors in the cast include Robert Downey, Jr. (“Chaplin”) and Charles Martin Smith, the “Toad” from “American Graffiti.”

Continuing in the tradition of great poker scenes in movies like “The Cincinnati Kid,” “The Sting,” “Rounders,” and the recent James Bond movie starring Daniel Craig, “Casino Royale,” “Lucky You” has all the right elements to be one of the best ones.
