10 Tips on Potty Training: Part 1

By: Mary Green

Use these 10 Tips on Potty Training to help your little one succeed in getting out of diapers.

1. Don't Start too Early- There are many reasons not to start too early. For most starting early drags out the process, taking it from a couple of weeks to months of time to get trained.

2. Be positive- Even when your baby makes a mistake and messes all over the rug or in his pants or wherever, do not punish, this too can drag out the process, and can cause constipation, because they start holding it.

3. Watch for Fear- The reason your child might not be going on the potty is for some kind of fear of it. Try using different potties, different seats, or making it fun to go to the bathroom.

4. Teach Hygiene- While you are potty training toddlers it is a good time to teach hygiene. Make sure they wash their hands when they have used the potty. Another added bonus of this tip is that they have fun. Kids love playing in the water. So, if they go potty, either one, let them wash their hands for a few minutes, as a reward.

5. Reward- Work out a system where, when your child has gone potty they get some kind of reward for doing the right thing. Such as they start to tell you when they have to go, so you give them something they enjoy.

6. Be Consistent- If you have to travel bring a portable potty seat. If you are just running to the store, don't throw on a diaper. Have them go before they leave the house.

7. Let them choose- Letting your child pick what kind or design of underwear they want, is a reward. Once they are doing well let them go with you to pick out some unders. We also took my son potty shopping, so that he could help pick out his potty.

8. Share- Once you know what you are going to do to make potty training work, make sure you share it with people who are regulars in your life. Grandparents, Babysitters, etc. This way they will know what to expect, and what to do when something happens.

9. Potty Placement- When you first start, let them have their potty where they are comfortable, but not in front of the television, that makes the potty a seat instead of a potty. Later once they get the hang of it, you can leave the potty in the bathroom.

10. Ask Once, Ask Again- Ask your child many, many times if they have to go, even if you think you have asked enough, ask again. Ask before a meal, ask after, ask before leaving and when you get home.

Using these tips should help you and your child have a pleasant experience potty training. It will get frustrating, but try to remember any negativity from you can cause them to regress.
