Every era brings with it new technologies. Imagine living back in the day when man learned how to create fire? He must have thought it was magic; Ah, the Fire God! Think of the invention of the wheel, well that indeed must have sped things along. Today is no different, as each innovation, discovery and invention of a new technology makes our lives easier and more efficient. The only significant observation is one that Futurist Ray Kurzweil and others have made and that is that the speed at which new discoveries are being made is coming at us faster and faster than ever before. Each new innovation has a ripple effect and it affects other Industries, endeavors and research areas. This compounding affect is causing many areas of science to look more like a hyperbolic curve, as the new discoveries increase at a neck-breaking pace. New state-of-the-art technology sometimes does not even get to market before a new technology in the same industry sub-sector leap-frogs over it making the just yesterday’s bleeding edge discoveries obsolete before it even becomes adopted. So what are the new technologies, which are going to rock our world in the next decade or two? Well, in biosciences we quite a bit on the horizon and the same thing in material sciences, alternative energy, nano-technology, quantum mechanics, artificial intelligence, computer sciences, robotics and space technologies. What does all this mean?It means that with each new discovery in one area it will have a huge affect in the others. For instance new materials such as nano-technology materials will make aircraft lighter and perform better and new robotics technologies will increase UAV or unmanned aerial vehicle exploits, while artificial intelligence will improve safety on top of that. And this is only one of a thousand examples illustrating this point. My hope is that you will use this article to propel thought and consider it a mental exercise in the philosophy of the technology of the future and what it means to the forward progression of the human species. I appreciate your reading of this article. Perhaps this subject is of interest for your mind to explore in 2007?
