Urgent requests. Distractions. Difficulty saying “no.” As a pastor, you’re expected to lead your church and congregation smoothly everyday, and yet it’s easy to get hung up on urgent requests, distractions, and having to tell someone “no.” Check our 26 ways to improve your effectiveness as a leader:1. Set goals and have a robust action plan to achieve them. Move forward with confidence and strength.2. Take control of your daily schedule. Organize your tasks and find the best time to do them. If you need to, turn off distractions.3. Take time off. Give yourself some down time to rejuvenate so you can come back fresh and ready to accomplish your tasks.4. Delegate. Constantly ask yourself “Am I the best person for the task?” Assign duties to someone more capable and is willing to take on the task and learn.5. Commit time to develop others. Teaching others what you know is a way of circulating your leadership style around.6. Learn to say “no.” Don’t take on too many duties, so you can not perform at your best.7. Stop tolerating poor performance (your own and staff members). Accept only the best.8. Look at any problem and see a solution. Be a problem solver. Don’t let problems pile up and creating more problems.9. Stop procrastinating. Make decisions – even the hard ones. Realize there are no mistakes.10. Stop whining. Complaining will get you no where. Use positive words to create positive results.11. When asking a question in a meeting, don’t accept the first answer. Probe for the 3rd, 4th and 5th answer. Brainstorm and collect many solutions as you can. This will result in a better solution and give everyone a chance to participate.12. Learn how to listen – not just hear, listen, really listen. Use your eyes to let the other person know you care. Give them some feedback to let them know their words are being heard.13. React less and respond more.14. Effectively utilize technology. Emails take less time than a phone call and will free up some time.15. Graciously tell the truth – not what people want to hear.16. Allow time in your daily schedule that is not obligated.17. Get out of a rut and nudge others to do the same.18. Eliminate office/desk clutter. Organization will free up some time.19. Move throughout the day being fully present.20. Keep commitments.21. Ask for anonymous 360º evaluations by the staff. Develop a plan of action to make improvements.22. Prioritize. Everything can’t be urgent.23. Encourage the staff to think more for answers and solutions by asking them questions. Give fewer answers.24. Identify and eliminate distractions.25. Improve your communication effectiveness.26. Define the legacy you desire to leave.
