5 Strategies to Embracing Change and Staying Effective and Organized

By: Krista Bloom

Change is inevitable. At home, at work, and in the world, people and organizations are constantly evolving and changing. No one can stop change, as it is the only constant in life. All living things are constantly changing and moving. Think of yourself on a vessel on the ocean. What kind of boat do you need to keep from feeling swept away when the ocean’s current is rougher than the usual high and low tides? Here are a few forms of change and strategies to help you navigate better through the different types of change that occur throughout life.

Personal Change:
1. Take Care of Yourself First and Always. Prioritize your needs. Having your daily basic requirements met is necessary, not optional, if you want to function well in your life. The proper amount of sleep, healthy food, social time, fun, air, water, and intimacy are always at the center of your mind and being. After all, how can you assist others if you don’t take care of you? As a healer, you may often tell others to take care of themselves. Well, take your own advice and care about and for yourself. Allow yourself the courage to stand up for yourself and your needs that you can model healthy living for others. People around you will notice how you live much more acutely than they hear the words that you speak.

Professional Change:
2. Create consistency in yourself as a professional. Perhaps you have shifted your career by choice and/or by necessity. Perhaps your company needs have changed and you need to assume new or different roles. We live in a world that is becoming increasingly specialized. Think about what your gifts are as a professional. What else would you like to see for yourself professionally? Defining who you are is about authenticity, or being true to you and your talents. Know that it is ok to define and redefine yourself, and to work within your organization to carve out a new place that suits you and the organization.

Organizational Change:
3. When things get hectic, slow down! This may sound strange, but perhaps you are overdoing everything. You are tired, run down, and yet you think you can’t get anything accomplished. It can help sometimes if you take time to be where you are. Take a few minutes to reflect on the service that you have been hired to provide to your organization. Focus on serving people better in your organization, whether it is clients, coworkers, employees, or the community. If you stay focused on your purpose, you will not get so overwhelmed with changes going on around you. Stay open to discovering new ways to help others.

Interpersonal Change
4. Fuel positive growth, while extinguishing the fire of negativity. You have likely had a variety of interpersonal challenges throughout your life. People change, people leave, people go through promotions, and many life transitions. Some people cope well, and others always seem to be stuck and to create difficulties. You may want to help the “stuck” ones, but be careful not to fuel the negativity fire. At some point, you may need to let go with love. You can do this by redirecting those who invite you to gossip or create drama. Invite them to be part of the solution with you. Through your actions, you are actually working to direct yourself and the organization in a more successful direction!

Community Change:

5. Stay on the Cutting Edge:
If you are a person who enjoys helping others, then you are a creative person. It is important, no matter what is going on in the community or in the world, to always find new ways to be the most effective in your profession and in your life. Realizing that you are part of something larger than yourself is a very good way to experience meaning and joy. Whether you are involved in committees, community activities, or self-improvement work, you are working on something important. Think of how you choose to spend your time. Stay focused, no matter what is happening. If you feel stuck and need assistance, find a mentor, coach, or other support person who can work with you so that you can be happy and live a balanced life. Be brave and take risks. Try new things; you and your organization may just be wildly successful!

Here is a review of the 5 strategies, that tie into the “One” Principles developed by Lance Secretan.

1. Take Care of Yourself (Courage)
2. Create Consistency (Authenticity)
3. Slow Down (Service)
4. Fuel Positive Growth (Love)
5. Stay on the Cutting Edge (Effectiveness)

It is not change that is the problem in itself. It is fear, self-doubt, apathy, or uncertainty of the unknown that keeps you in chaos. Since you are in charge of your life, both personal and professional, you can choose differently. If you apply the 5 strategies every day, you can stay on track to being successful and happy, without creating chaos!
