A 30 Day Crusade Against Smoking - Day 3 - A Slip Of The Fingers

By: Eric Hartwell

Bans on public smoking are spreading throughout the world. That suits Eric who is a lifelong non-smoker, nay, ANTI-smoker. For 30 days he will change the world and the habits of current smokers.

Day 3:

Things are getting a little fraught around the house. My wife, basically, refuses to stop smoking. I tell her that she is killing herself and she tells me that what she does is her affair. I then tell her that she is killing me and she tells me that it will happen a lot sooner if I don’t stop going on about it. She is a strong woman and I don’t take threats like that lightly.

A different approach is therefore needed. Softly, softly catchee monkee. The local hardware store has always bee a helpful and resourceful place. Their prices are high and the proprietor has a glass eye which pints in the opposite direction to his real one, but I still like him. He is down to earth and to the point. A visit there has paid dividends.

So it was that my wife reached for her latest cigarette. She had that smug look on her face. She would not be swayed by my mutterings and would never voluntarily admit that I was, in any shape or form, right. I had had 20 years of this attitude.

I was in the other room. As she opened the packet I could hear the “SNAP” of the mousetrap on her fingers. I wasn’t trying to break the bones of course. Drawing blood and inflicting severe pain would have been enough. She squealed and I came running. She was in tears and looked forlorn. There was blood everywhere and she looked distressed indeed.

She beckoned me over and I was very glad to help. I prised off the mousetrap and hugged her. “Help me!” she cried. She pushed me aside as she used her bloodstained hand to collect a stray cigarette from the floor. “Could you light it for me?”
