A Guide to the Exhibition and Events venues in Birmingham

By: Catherine Gliddon

Birmingham is a very handy for exhibitions and events, with access to the city by motorway, international airport and from the main rail network. As one of the largest cities in the UK, Birmingham holds some of the top international exhibitions and getting to the main exhibition venues is fairly straight-forward although you may need to allow time for traffic which can sometimes build up near the NEC! Below we look at the main exhibition and events venues in Birmingham.

The National Exhibition Centre (NEC) Group provides space for some extremely popular events and seats 12,300 visitors who come to watch the concerts and sporting events held there. These events include the World Figure Skating and World Gymnastics Championships, the Spanish Riding School of Vienna, World Wrestling Entertainment, Supercross, and Gatecrasher, to name just a few! It is also the location of the Horse of the Year Show with numerous large-scale conventions and conferences, including those held by the Lions Club International.

As part of the NEC, the National Indoor Arena (NIA) has hosted events such as the Eurovision Song Contest, Disney on Ice and Madam Butterfly, with artistes like Paul McCartney, Oasis, Coldplay, Russell Watson and Destiny's Child performing there.

The NIA Academy offers a theatre-style auditorium that seats up to 4,500 visitors and was the venue for Sir Cliff Richard's world premiere production of Heathcliff. For conferences and related events, exhibitors are directed to the International Convention Center with its eleven halls and ten executive conference rooms, each of which offers a foyer and registration desk. The ICC provides support in the form of professional event management advice, logistics, catering, staging, and AV technology.

The Town Hall, Birmingham, provides a seating capacity of 1,086 patrons. It is equipped with sound and lighting equipment, a stage for performers and choir, and a backstage and green room area for those VIPs. The most prestigious international orchestras are often found performing at the neighboring Symphony Hall, which is home to the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. The auditorium seats around 2,200 patrons and offers a modern concert hall with state of the art acoustics. A 6,000 pipe symphony organ was recently installed to add to the performances held there.
