A Letter From Juvenile Hall

For 10 years I had my volunteer program at Juvenile Hall called "Be a Winner in Life." I asked the incarcerated kids to help me save other kids. The result was my book "Letters from Juvenile Hall" Kids Helping Kids. This is one of the letters from my book. Please get it out to kids who are at risk or to parents who need help with their kid with the potential of getting into gangs.

I MADE A BIG MISTAKE IN MY LIFE I JOINED A GANG

BOY - Age 17

I made a big mistake in my life…When I was fifteen, I joined a gang, and ever since then my life was never the same, in the worst way possible.

Before I got into the gang, I was a real good football player. I played for San Diego High. I was a running back, and I was one of the best in the school. I also had good grades and manners. After a year or so, I started getting involved more and more with the gang members. That was the biggest mistake ever. I started getting lazy and stubborn. Not doing no schoolwork, nor was I going to practice. I was gang banging for the RED.

One day I was Bicken it with one of my, so called, homeboys and he decided he needed a car, so we were walking down the street and seen a old lady, walking to her car. My friend ran up to her, assaulted her by kicking her, and took her keys. He told me to jump in, but I was afraid of getting in trouble, but he started making fun of me so I hopped in the car, to be cool.

Driving around with a stolen car all night. By the end of the night he asked me if he could leave the car at my house. I said that’s fine, (like an idiot). 4 a.m. in the morning, cops are all over my house. They came in and got me.

Now 20 months later I’m in here, paying 8 years for car jacking & robbery. My “friend” is nowhere to be found and the victim believes it’s me that hurt her, but she’s not sure.

What my message to you is, you have no real friends. Your best friends are your family. That’s what I learned the hard way.
