A Look at Key Minerals For Memory Enhancement And Cognitive Support

By: J Wall

In previous articles we've taken a look at how various vitamins, antioxidants and other nutrients benefit the brain, but we haven't focused as much on using minerals for memory enhancement. However, there are a number of key minerals that also support cognitive function which we need to make sure are a part of our daily diet.

Memory minerals are those which the brain specifically utilizes and without which the brain is impacted. These minerals are used in a variety of functions from cell protection to brain chemical and neurotransmitter production.

One of the first minerals for memory that we need to look at is Selenium. Much like vitamins C and E, Selenium has similar antioxidant capabilities. It works within the body to eliminate free radicals and protect cells from the damage they cause. This is important for the brain as researchers believe that many of the age related issues with the brain as well as diseases like Alzheimer's and dementia are in part caused by free radical damage to nerve cells. Selenium works to protect the brain from this type of damage.

Selenium can be found in cereals, meat and eggs. It also is a component of various amino acids produced in the body and helps support Thyroid function. Studies have been done that also show that people with lower than recommend daily intakes of Selenium have higher risk for certain cancers.

Another important memory mineral is Manganese. Manganese is important to nerve cells as well as other cells in the body as it is part of a wide variety of enzymes and their functions. Manganese is found in grains, cereals and teas among other sources. Some studies also suggest that Manganese can help regulate blood sugar levels and may help in controlling seizures.

Lithium is another of our minerals for memory and brain function. Lithium is involved in a number of activities within the body. Where the brain is concerned, Lithium works with several processes related to the use of certain neurotransmitters. It also helps vitamins B12 and Folate enter brain cells where it can be used. Doctors sometimes use it to treat those suffering from Bipolar Disorder.

The last mineral for memory that we'll look at is Zinc. Zinc has been widely used for some time now to treat cold, flu and other diseases because of its ability to boost the immune system. It is also used with other antioxidant compounds to treat age related vision loss. However, Zinc is also used in thousands of proteins synthesized by the body as well as participating in enzyme activation. Studies have also found that diets deficient in Zinc result in memory loss as well reduction in other bodily functions showing a strong connection to brain functions. Zinc can be found in seafood, meats, nuts and some grains.

While we should attempt to get these memory minerals from the food we eat, that is not always possible. Often people do not get all the daily recommended amounts of healthy foods due to cost, schedule or other factors. Those that do may still not get what they need as modern processing of foods often strips away many vitamins, minerals and other nutrients.

It may be necessary to use supplements to fill in the gaps in our daily intake of these vital nutrients. There are a number of them out there that contain these minerals for memory and provide other vitamins and compounds necessary for a healthy brain. Always consider supplements made by a reputable company and consult a medical expert if you are taking prescription medicines as there could be interactions. Either way it is important to ensure we get adequate levels of these nutrients in order for our brains to function properly.
