There are a lot of things wrong with this world. The vitality of the United States of America is threatened. All nations are weakened with time. When I was growing up, my father studied the Russian language for ten years. He said that the Soviet Union would have dramatic changes and that he intended to some day serve a mission there for the Mormon Church. Dad died in 1988 at age eighty-eight and his dream did not come true. But his prediction did. There are now many missionaries in the former Soviet Union from many churches because of the drastic changes predicted by my father..I can still say a few Russian words because of my father. One night years ago I flew out of London over Finland and then over the Soviet Union. I stayed awake all night because the moon was full and I could see the beauty of that country, the great forest and rivers. I had no inkling then, other than the words of my father, that that great nation would founder.Well, our great nation will founder too. The current administration is accelerating the process. The president, no genius, has run his office using the buddy system . He has shown, and is still showing, fierce loyalty to incompetents and their ridiculous management of governmental affairs. Every blunder is followed by the selection of a scapegoat. From Katrina to the current Attorney General, someone has or will fall because of White House stupidity. The greatest blunder was the ridiculous assumption that we had to go into Iraq to avenge the destruction of the Twin Towers. By going into Iraq, with the stupid premise that we would be welcomed by the survivors of the first Bush War—who had lost many loved ones to our bombs and gunfire—we weakened our efforts to destroy the Taliban and Osama bin Laden.Osama bin Laden will die of old age before this administration will ever find that murderer. (I keep saying that he is drinking lemonade in Mecca but nobody will listen.)Al-Qaeda was not in Iraq before Bush War II. It is in full force there now and all Iraqis are now joining to fight al-Qaeda before it takes over their country. There are some differences between the Taliban and al-Qaeda.The prime mover to the destruction on the United States as the financial powerhouse of the world is the trade deficit. We have not protected our valuable technologies that came at high cost to us. We give them away for peanuts to make other countries rich.We have not protected our workers. You can’t blame only the President for the current situation. You have to blame our large corporations who in the last decades have done everything they could to reduce operating cost. The driving force has always been competition and the profit banana that low operating cost offers.I’ve sat in many a corporate meeting where we looked at every country in the world to determine where we could obtain the lowest cost. We decided that we could produce our products in the United States at low cost with proper engineering. We built two new plants and re-engineered another. Eventually, competition forced the company to import from overseas manufacturers and only one of the factories is still operating. Most everything is now imported. One way to force down labor cost is to import foreign workers. Many European nations have done this. In the United States, we have never set up a workable plan allowing foreign workers to come to the United States. However, the economy always runs itself and borders or laws can not restrict it for long.Foreign workers from Mexico and Central America have swarmed across our borders. These workers are employed from Donald Trump’s casinos in Atlantic City to ceramic factories in Los Angeles. They supply the needed labor for our agricultural operations here in Idaho.I visited a ceramic factory in California some years back where Immigration had “raided” the factory and sent off a large number of employees across the border to Tijuana. The next day, they were all back at work again. When I lived in Atlantic City I knew Mexicans who had changed their names and had fake papers verifying that they were indeed Puerto Ricans with American citizenship. If it were not for illegal immigration, more American jobs would be overseas. Why is this so? I look at it this way. Many of the best factory and service jobs are still held by Americans. If the labor jobs go overseas, so do those jobs.China and Japan and other foreign countries buy our debt and our securities. If these financial instruments (such as stocks and bonds) are threatened, they will be traded for more reliable investments if safer investments can be found. Asians often think of gold and silver as “real money.” The stability of the United States is very important to these countries but some do no feel that they have to support our misguided foreign policies. If China were supporting our interest, we would be doing what we do at lower cost.As the value of our currency slides the threat of major international financial changes is real. China is in a rock and a hard place. They do not want to weaken their own currency and they do not want to have to make major adjustments to their financial positions. The fact of the matter is that the economy always takes care of itself and it doesn’t give one hoot for what China and others think. The administration has brought the United States close to bankruptcy. I don’t like to think about another Great Depression, however, that is the road on which we trod.Because of Bush War II, the President was reelected. Americans do not like to change horses midstream especially if there is a hot war going on and we had fighting men in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Some probably thought that the President would profit from his four years of experience and do a better job. The fact of the matter is that the President is doing the best job that he knows how to do. He would have done and would be doing a much better job if he had competent and experienced advisors directing him instead of his buddies. It would have been a great service to the people of the United States if the Vice President had followed the example of most all other Vice Presidents. He should have spent his time hunting and fishing. His personal interest in big oil and Haliburton have help cripple our economy mostly due to bad judgment, exorbitant waste, and overspending. The privacy of United States citizens has been jeopardized. There has been too little thought given to the internal security of the United States. There is insufficient protection of our monetary system. We can not respond to natural disasters in a timely efficient manner. But those and other such problems are not the main problem which is that: We have too few strong-minded but intelligent people in the halls of Congress, people who know what America is all about, what the constitution guarantees, and how to conduct business in an efficient manner.Congress sits back on its partisan haunches and dabbles in government. Public service is actually public disservice. Decisive intelligent argument is missing. Congressional debate is more a congressional harangue, each speaker more interested in himself than the people of the United States.Who can resolve this situation? The politicians? When the American people stop following party and media propaganda and start thinking for themselves, then changes for the better will come. The political parties and the lobbyist have too much influence on government. We need to lessen their influence. The United States is not a Democracy, it is a Republic where we rely on constitutional representation. When that representation is not working, we need to resort to Democracy where every person thinks for himself and acts accordingly. In America, that means to vote the incompetents out of office regardless of party. You still don't know what to do? Well, just buy American! The Endcopyright©1007 John Taylor Jones, Ph.D.
