Ma'am do not move or make a sound. Do not move a finger. The dog got poised to jump and the policeman shot it dead in mid-air. It landed at the feet of Joy. She had wet herself and was slowly sinking to the ground as the Officer grabbed her under the arm and let her softly sit on the grass. He had saved the life of that lady while his wife was slowly losing hers. Randy had been on the force for five years now and suddenly his bright world turned sour. The owner of the dog he shot was making trouble and there were no witnesses to the scene; however Joy stood firm in the true story and he knew he would probably win a lawsuit. However he may have to pay court costs, etc.He was being described as gun happy in the news and was taken off duty until the hubbub died down. He had been spending all his time at his wife's bedside who had lost their first baby and was slowly passing away in the hospital from an infection they could not identify or control. He had lost their first-born and his wife died the next day. He went home and poured himself a few stiff drinks and then foolishly let his grief and alcohol impair his judgment and decided to go get comfort from his parents and wrecked the patrol car and was judged drunk. He was suspended due to the headlines. He went back to the bottle for a month and became a totally wasted wreck. He hemorrhaged from the alcohol and not eating and spent two weeks in the hospital without insurance coverage, so most of his savings were used paying the hospital bill. They repossessed his car. He managed to sell his home and recovered a few dollars equity. He bought a motorcycle because they did not use gas and he could get away and work this out or become a bum. Plus there was the lawsuit pending so he decided to leave Chicago and go to Alaska. He was now a drifter and Alaska sounded like the end of the world. "Yes that was where he was headed, he thought, the end of the world." Randy rode his bike up the Alcan Hi way to Alaska. His head was still not right. He missed his wife and his job and parents terribly. He had to find himself and a new direction. He had wilderness training in the service and had done a lot of camping and hunting, so he outfitted himself and went as far as he could to the last cabin in that part of the state. He had rented it and packed in on horses. With his know how and good equipment he felt he would do fine here for a while. He stayed two years. The first year was kind of bad in the evenings. Self-pity and lowly thoughts kept creeping in. The second year things were some better. All that time with nature made him realize that there must be a reason that nature worked so well. A higher power. Soon he was talking to this higher power in his mind. Then he asked for a favor. That he recover from this lowly feeling and regain his positive attitude. The dog's face kept jumping at him in his dreams. Those fierce hateful eyes and that mouth with fangs ready to rip flesh haunted him. He supposed it haunted that woman too. When he decided to leave the lonely outpost, he left all his gear in the cabin and turned the horses loose. His gear would be a nice thing for any lost soul who might use the cabin in the future. He buttoned it up the cabin for the coming winter and hiked out to civilization. He was a bear of a man anyway. Now with his long hair and beard and clothes his appearance was much like the mountain men you see in the movies. He smelled like one also. He knew he should go somewhere and clean up before showing himself, however he had been thinking about a beer for over a year now. So he found a rather nice saloon in the first block of town. He stumbled into a booth exhausted. The waitress was taken aback at this stranger's appearance and the smell of burned wood and body odor, or perhaps it was the fur clothes but it was bad. On his second beer he found out where to go for a room and bath. He knew he should not start heavy drinking. He had a buzz already on two beers. He put his head back, closed his eyes and was trying to decide if he could have one more beer.He almost fell asleep when he heard the woman in the next booth say, "It was the scariest thing in the world. This beast, yes that was what it was, not a dog but a beast. Anyway this beast had huge fangs and horrible eyes. His snarl would make your blood chill. I just knew I was going to die. Then this marvelous policeman, wherever he came from, was behind me saying, "Do not move or make a sound. Do not move a finger."Just as he finished saying that the dog got a footing and jumped for my face, I knew I was dead. Then before the dog's hind feet left the ground there was a gunshot and the dog fell at my feet, his paws ran down the front of my dress as he fell. I could still smell his breath-expelled inches from my face.I realized my clothes were wet where I had pissed in my panties and I was faint. He supported me to the ground where I sat crying for a while. A policewoman came for me and I never did get to thank that man who saved me. I barely remember what he even looked like.A lawyer called me to get a statement. Then I found out the poor man was losing his wife who had lost her child. Later he lost her and it said in the papers he was arrested for drunken driving and he had wrecked the police car. No one knows what happened to him after that. It has been two years ago. I wanted to go thank him but he just disappeared."I cannot recall his name. A deep male voice spoke up from the booth behind them where he could not be seen. "His name was Randy White." Chills came all over her. What was going on? Was someone making fun of her? Then a bear of a man, terribly unkempt and dirty rose behind her and turned. He just stood and stared. She was sitting with another girl, but he never saw her. He just looked at this dark haired, nice looking lady. His mind rolled back to the day of the dog. That instant he knew his bad dog nightmares were over. This woman could not have just wondered in here and set next to him at the ends of the earth by accident. It was the higher power doing him the favor for which he had asked. That pretty face would have been torn down to the bone were it not for him. He had done well. He felt his self esteem come flooding back and before the ladies eyes he suddenly seemed a bit taller and his eyes had taken on a sparkle. Love was in the air.
