A Writer's Forum: Time Waster or Valuable Resource?

By: Scott Lindsay

There have been those who strongly encourage writers to avoid online forums. The reason seems to be the belief that a forum is a fun way to interact with others and would likely detract from your interest in actual writing.

This idea seems to suggest that the negative effects of a forum outweigh any good that may come from participation.

An argument is made on the opposite side of the ledger that provides many valid reasons for using an online forum for writers. In many cases an online forum is the only means many new writers have to gain further insight into writing among other like-minded writers who also find they need a certain amount of encouragement to move along in their writing.

Perhaps a healthy online writer's forum could be described as an incubator for writers. Many ‘new generation’ writers discovered the courage to submit material through their personal involvement in an online forum.

The key component to an online forum is balance. Each writer needs to determine what amount of time they will spend on a forum board. It is possible to allow a writer's board to consume so much of your time that you never actually get to the writing you would like to do.

For those who have little use for a writer's forum board it is easy to theorize that they struggle with a disparity between actual writing and like-minded correspondence with other writers.

A writer's forum often finds writers at various stages in their writing journey. Some writers are very new and trying to learn if they have what it takes to write. You will likely discover published authors on these forums and many of them are willing to provide not only encouragement, but also a few tips that are received as a cold drink in the desert by other writers. Often new writers find a true sense of community in a writer's forum that they may not be able to find in their own region.

It may be true that there comes a time when an online writer's forum becomes less important in your day to day activities. However, by finding the right balance a forum can still play a role in the development of either your writing or the development of your role as a mentor to other aspiring writers.
