Let’s talk about ADD and how you can be consistent. How can you be consistent in completing projects, in getting chores done, in making sure that you don’t set yourself up for failure by having expectations that you just can’t meet?I think that’s probably one of the biggest reasons why ADD people end up failing and not being consistent is because we beat ourselves up. This is huge. If you can’t walk the dog on a regular basis, if you’re not extremely excited about walking the dog on a regular basis, then how much would it cost to hire a neighborhood kid to walk the dog?That’s if you have to be that consistent and what if you don’t have to?It’s important that you, first of all, start thinking about where it’s important to be consistent—because there are some things where it’s really important, there are other things that could slip and, “Oh well, it’s not going to matter.”For a lot of people, eating on a regular basis is something you want to be fairly consistent about or you can have problems with productivity. A lot of ADD-ers forget to eat. There are two ways that you can master this problem.One is by setting your alarm. Or, have a system set up in your household where it’s understood that you have ADD and will forget about food. Get someone to remind you. That's it. Once that’s agreed upon, you don’t have to think about it anymore. Another ADD problem solved.Most people would just be too embarrassed to try doing something like that, but the other piece of your ADD-friendly system is that it’s got to be convenient. So, when you’re talking about eating, specifically, how can you make it convenient?Is there something that you can grab that’s already pre-made that you can get from the store or all the way up to having meals brought in for you, if you want to do that? Or are there healthy snacks that you can grab? Is there something you can grab easily so that you don’t have to shift gears—and say you don’t like to cook—and then you have to go do something you don’t like to do? That won't help ADD people to be consistent.There are ways of setting it up that are great for those of us with ADD. You have to use your innate ADD creativity, based on what it is you need help being consistent with. The first and the most important part is—for those things that you don’t want to be consistent with or you don’t have to deal with—to figure out a way of getting those out of your life quickly by delegating the responsibility.Number two, on the things you do have to be consistent with, start figuring out how you can make those things easier to be consistent with. If you need to do microwave burritos for lunch every day, do microwave burritos for lunch every day and take some extra vitamins, please. Speaking of vitamins, that’s another great example.People think that in order to take vitamins, you have to take them every single day at the same time. That’s what it says on the bottle, right? People often ask, “How do you remember to take your vitamins at the same time every day?” You don’t have to remember to take your vitamins at the same time every day. Have your vitamins sitting next to you on the kitchen table where you sit down to eat.It’s a visual cue. When you sit down to eat, you see the vitamins sitting there, and you can ask yourself, "Did I take my vitamins today? No? Well I better take them since they’re sitting right next to me and I have a glass of water with my lunch.”And BAM! That’s that. But everybody’s system can be different.Just recognize what kinds of cues work for you. An audible alarm? A visual cue, like the vitamins, or delegating the responsibility of remembering to someone else? Whatever that is, fit it into an ADD-friendly system and you'll have it conquered.
