Adult ADD - What If School Seems Too Hard?

By: Tellman Knudson

If you have ADD and are a student, you may find that you go to school every day, sit in class and think: This is so easy! ADD people are intelligent and do find classes to be too easy sometimes, even when they're thinking at a very high collegiate level.

Now, we aren't telling anyone to stop going to school. But, people with ADD do not thrive without intellectual stimulation. They just don't. So, how can you get yourself interested again?

First, set deadlines for yourself. If you have a huge paper due or a project of some type, put a deadline on it, and don't set it too far into the future or make it last-minute or this won't work. Give yourself ample time to complete the project and then, double it. That way, you'll know you have this deadline, but if you accomplish it way before the deadline comes, how good will you feel about yourself?

So, let's say you have a term paper due in four weeks. If you need to go to the library and research or research online, how long will that take you? Give that a deadline, too. Otherwise, you could become so ADD-hyperfocused on the topic, if it's something that interests you, and forget to stop. You'll over-research the topic.

OK so you figure it's going to take about a 5 days to research the topic thoroughly, without over-researching. Then, let's say it's going to take you another 5 days to write the paper and a couple more for editing and proofreading. You need 12 days to complete the paper. Make it 24. That gives you an extra 4 days to work on it, if need be. But you don't want to need those 4 days.

Once you've started researching, maybe you find that it only takes the 5 days you planned for. And what if it takes only 3 days to write the paper and 1 to edit and proofread? If you schedule in time to work on the paper every day and do it religiously, you'll have the thing done, ready to hand over in just 9 days. Then, how good will you feel?

People with ADD need to set schedules like this because they really help us get through the boring stuff. If the topic you're working on is just so incredibly boring that you almost fall asleep while working on it, you may never get it done because it's so against your ADD nature.

So, if that's the case, use a timer. Give yourself an hour each day to work on whatever it is. Do nothing else during that hour. Don't answer the phone, go to the door, or check your email. Put your ADD focus to work and make it focus for just one hour.

Of course, if you have a paper due in a week, and you need more than 7 hours to do it, you'll have to adjust your time accordingly. Maybe you can do an hour in the morning and a half hour at night, or something, but what we're getting at is that ADD people have to schedule in things that absolutely have to be done, not matter how boring they are.

Otherwise, they might never get done.

Then, what happens? You're down on yourself. You feel like you failed at something. It's just awful! Don't do that. Plan a little ahead, give yourself a schedule to follow, and you'll be a much happier and a more successful person.
