Adult ADD: Creating ADD-Friendly Systems

By: Tellman Knudson

People with ADD can be continually late for appointments, often lose car keys, or find themselves in a flurry of activity because they can't seem to get it together. If you're one of those ADD-ers, you're probably frustrated and upset with yourself. You don't like these things to happen and when they do, you blame yourself.

Don't. It's your ADD.

There are ways to conquer these issues and they center around finding an ADD-friendly system that's right for you.

There are two kinds of systems. One is a strategic type of a system, and one is a tactical type of a system. The difference is this: a strategic system essentially points you in a direction, it points you toward a method of doing something, points you in decision making and how you're going to accomplish something, and gives you a direction.

A tactical kind of a system is doing the exact same thing over and over and over again to produce the exact same result. So you think of a franchise right, like McDonalds. Michael Gerber who wrote the E-Myth series is famous for telling people that they have to run their business like a franchise. Well, the whole idea is this: If you go into a McDonalds and you are in Arkansas or you're in California or you're in Ohio, you get exactly the same French fry no matter where you are. And that's because they have a very tactical system to produce and complete the same end result.

But at the same time, they have strategic systems that allow for help with things like how do you work with people, relationship building, hiring, firing, little more complex systems. So tactical systems can be very, very simple to get the same end result.

So in the case of losing your car keys for example, one of the systems you can use is called "The Launch Pad." Make things really simple, and follow things that you would normally do anyway.

If you drive your car into your garage, do you walk into the house and throw your keys on the kitchen table, for instance? Instead of being frustrated and trying to force yourself to walk across the room and hang up a key or do something different, simply use a "launch pad." It can be a small table with a tiny surface – right next to the door, so that when you walk in, the first thing you see is that table and not the kitchen table and boom! Keys go now on the launch pad. That’s a very simple, tactical kind of a system.

Some systems like this are really great for folks who have ADD.

But if you're not a systems person, and if you have ADD, the idea may be daunting. So, start small and think about those things that are really, really irritating you, first of all. And we have a saying: For every frustration, it means there's a problem with the system.

Another system that you can implement, is to make sure that you get healthy meals two times a day, seven days a week. You can pay a caterer to make food for you to pre-make, pre-prepare food. Some goes in the fridge; some goes in the freezer. It may end up costing a lot less than you would guess. During the time that it would have normally taken you to plan and prepare and cook a meal, you can now focus on what you're really good at doing.

These are just two simple systems that people with ADD might find helpful. Decide what frustrates you and see if you can't make something more convenient for yourself or if you can hire someone to do the work that you don't have time for or just plain don't want to do because it's ADD boring! Systems can be freeing, and release your tension. Always think of ways to change your life and make it ADD-friendly.
