When you have ADD, delegation is something you need to work into. You have to decide first, how you can get what you need done in the most economical way. So, you either delegate to family members or you pay someone to do things for you. Whatever you decide, remember that your ADD will prevent you from doing some simple things, simply because the tasks, which aren't inherently difficult, are just plain boring. But always remember that you don't want to spend more money than you can afford to lose. That's the key thing that people with ADD sometimes forget. Don't spend more money than you can afford to lose. Be willing to flush it down the toilet in case it doesn't work. But the key is one step at a time. You can't delegate everything all at once, unless you have an amazing master plan. But you can delegate things one piece at a time, and that's just really important to remember.Something along those lines is really key to delegating. One of the questions that we have found is that people just want to do more for you after you ask one question. Once you tell them what you want done, ask them what they need to make it happen.Let's say you tell one of your employees that you want this report with these couple of numbers, because you think that's what you want right now. The key here is that you really want more than that, but you don't realize it. But at the same time, you'll probably be happy with just starting to get the reports so you can then at least make changes. You may not be getting the report in the way you want it at all right now, so figure that any report is better than none. The first time you build a business, you don't' really know what you're in for. The second time, you kind of get it. The third time, it's like old hat. I mean, it's just, "Yeah, I know I need this. Okay."So that's how it works, just like anything, after you do it once, great, now you've got the thing down pat. But after you go through all this you may end up saying, "Look, the books are wrong I want them right. It's as simple as that. And I don't know what kind of detail goes into that because that's your job and you're really smart, and I'm not when it comes to that. I have ADD and I hate it, and you love it."Then you say, "Okay, what do you need to make this happen?" People will flat out tell you. "I need the time to do it, I need to be able to talk to such and such and such and such on the team, I need to know who I'm supposed to talk to for this – I got her all the information, and I will get exactly what I want on the day that I want it because she has everything she needs to complete the job."The key is that most people, most of the time, consciously – and in many cases unconsciously – really aren't good at asking for what they want. They don't even know how, and they don't ever take the time to think about what it is that they want.So as a result, they never ask for it. If they never ask for something are you ever able to get what they need to them? No. Not unless, by serendipity, you happen to give them something that's helpful. But that's a bad way to do business or even to delegate to family members. When you ask people to do something for you, be sure to ask what they need to complete the job. That's rule one.But rule two is don't overspend. When you're delegating get the best people possible to do what you need done for the best price. If you do these two things--ask what they need to do the job, and never overspend, your delegation process will run smoothly.
