Adult ADD: Go with the Flow

We’ve talked about short bursts of energy, we’ve talked about focusing on your strengths and we’ve talked about outsourcing the boring parts—getting other people to do the boring parts or getting a system in place to do the boring parts in advance. But what are some other aspects of adult ADD that can throw you for a loop when you’re dealing with planning out a project?

Boredom is a big one. It’s a huge one! Again, ADD adults are all very, very intelligent people so we know what parts are going to be boring. This goes to setting expectation, too. A lot of times, when we’re excited about something, we start off by being consistent. We say to ourselves, “I’m going to exercise every single day.”

As soon as you have a day where you’re not feeling so energetic, what happens is you become anxious about the expectation you set for yourself. What’s really important here is that because of the short burst, we allow ourselves to have this exciting expectation for a short period of time.

It will also work with your natural adult ADD ebb and flow of energy so that you don’t beat yourself up—because setting a goal for a project, or anything that's for a year or any extended period of time means that you have to be more realistic in dealing with the ebb and flow.

This is such a big thing. When you’re dealing with adult ADD characteristics, don’t spend a moment of your day, literally not a moment, thinking about anything negative about your personality, or about ways that your ADD brain works or your life works, that are holding you back. Don’t spend anytime whatsoever thinking about things in that way.

It’s such an important thing because the truth is that you can look at any of your traits as something positive or something negative, including adult ADD and ADHD aside. Let’s just talk in reference to ADD. You can look at being easily distracted as a detriment or the ability to multi-task really well. You can look at it as a detriment or the ability to shift gears really easily.

It all depends on your perspective, the image that you perceive about having adult ADD. You can say that you daydream all the time and that’s wasting time or you can say that you’re probably one of the most innovative, creative people on the face of the earth. We all have downtime and there are these thoughts that are running through the back of our ADD brains on a regular basis, as we’re working on every single thing that we do.

If those thoughts are positive, if they’re forward thinking, if you’re looking at yourself as an unstoppable, super human, able to use your ADD brain to accomplish more than anyone else on the face of the earth, you will accomplish more than anyone else on the face of the earth because you can.

If you feel bad about yourself and your ADD, you’ve planned in advance that you’re going to be distracted and you’re going to go off in this direction and you’re going to go off in that direction, you are done. It’s all over. It’s a question of planning things out and working with other people.
