"In management, you have responsibility for the success of the individuals within your organization." While this may seem like an obvious statement, the definition of success is much more difficult. In most cases we define business success for the individual as accomplishing the assigned tasks and job related goals to measurements defined by the position or by the management. Many managers struggle with the concept of individual motivation and expect members of the organization to share the same desire to contribute toward the success of the team.Do you know how each person in your organization defines personal success?Do you know the personal goals of the people within your organization?Have you asked each individual what they would like to accomplish?Have you asked each person what talent or experience they have which may not be fully utilized at this time? Some individuals work for recognition, while others work for personal pride. Some people want to be promoted, while others are completely satisfied with the current position. Some people are working for education to a different career, and some people are primarily interested in supporting family or lifestyle. Some individuals place company as top priority, while others place their own future or their family as higher priority. There is no personal purpose that is any better or worse than another. Individual priorities and desires are not reflections of dedication, sacrifice, selfishness or capability. Individual priorities are shaped by personal experiences, goals and environment. The most honest motivation comes from understanding and appreciating the motivation of each individual. It starts with open and candid communications. If an individual desires promotion, the manager should help design a career path that promotes the qualities necessary. If the individual is seeking a different career, support alternative education and experiences while mutually preparing for transitioning the job responsibilities. If the individual is satisfied with the current position, focus on opportunities to make the job more efficient, productive and enjoyable.Openly and honestly discuss definitions of personal success. Discuss how to align personal goals with current responsibilities and company goals. Structure a plan that integrates elements of personal, professional and business related objectives to maximize individual talents. If you are successful in helping individuals achieve personal success that is aligned with professional responsibilities, utilizing untapped talents, then you will be a more successful leader.______________________________________________________ Words of Wisdom"Management is nothing more than motivating people." - Lee Iococca"Managers manage problems.
