LASIK has restored good eyesight to countless people. But a substantial group of patients don’t qualify for the procedure. For example, children under the age of 18 aren’t approved to undergo LASIK. Contact sports that involve blows to the face and head are another disqualifier. Oral steroids and retinoic acids can prevent timely healing. And some diseases, like HIV or diabetes, can preclude a patient from getting LASIK. If you want to correct your vision without LASIK, here are some good alternatives to discuss with your doctor. Laser Thermal Keratoplasty (LTK) This no-touch procedure is extremely noninvasive. During LTK, doctors use a holmium laser to shape the curve of the patient’s cornea. The grade of the cornea’s curve is made steeper. This procedure is used on farsighted patients age 40 and older. While the effects of LTK are long-lasting, they are not permanent. Conductive Keratoplasty (CK) During this procedure, the cornea is reshaped by the application of radiofrequency energy. This corrects farsightedness, though “blended vision” is also available. With blended vision, the cornea is reshaped so that objects far and near can be seen clearly. This is a very short procedure. It often takes fewer than 10 minutes to correct each eye. Intraocular Contact Lenses (ICLs) ICLs are contact lenses which are surgically implanted just behind the iris. This procedure has been lauded for the visual clarity it produces. ICLs leave the eye’s natural crystalline lense intact and do not involve the removal of corneal tissue. The procedure takes about 15 minutes per eye. Progressive Lenses If you don’t qualify for any of the vision correction surgeries, you should talk to your doctor about progressive lenses. These lenses are like bifocals, but without the telltale lines. They are fashioned to provide good distance vision, intermediate vision, and close-up vision. Don’t be discouraged if you’re not a good candidate for LASIK. There are plenty of alternatives to laser eye surgery. Discuss the options with your doctor to find the one that’s right for you.
