Am I a Candidate to Be Struck by Panic Disorder?

By: Robert Thomson

When a person walking through the forest runs across a venomous snake or some other dangerous animal, his/her normal respond would be to scream and to escape from the beast as quickly as possible.

If the same feelings of panic and horror come to surface without any real reasons and if they occur in a completely secure situation (while walking on the beach or enjoying a movie at the local cinema) you do not have to be a doctor to realize that something is not right with your health. Witnessing a few of such episodes in a short period of time (a few weeks or months) might be an indication that the person suffers from panic disorder.

At the very beginning the sufferers become very frightened and confused. The physical symptoms of panic disorder which can include palpitations, nausea, shortness of breath, dizziness, excessive sweating, jelly legs etc. make the sufferer to believe that something completely different is going on inside their bodies. Sufferers usually ask for help at the wrong places. They go to a whole range of different doctors undergoing countless examinations because they are convinced that the problem is with their heart, lungs, blood pressure and so on. The mental health professional is usually last on their list to visit.

While going through the panic attack patients usually believe that they have some kind of the malignant illness, they are going to faint on the spot, going mad or to lose their mind. Panic attack may occur every time when the sufferers find themselves in a particular situation or it can just happen without a clear reason regardless of the situation. A fair number of patients suffering from panic disorder also develop agoraphobia (fear of open or jammed places from which in a case of panic attack would be difficult to run away or to seek and obtain help.)

Panic attacks can even occur during the sleep. Hot weather also plays a role in panic disorder because sufferers experience more panic attacks during the warm summer months. The main reasons for this are that warm weather accelerates heart beats, stimulates dizziness and dehydration. Also, during these months people are more likely to spend their time outdoors and therefore have a much higher prospect of running into unfamiliar and unpleasant situations and places.

Although the real causes of panic disorder are unknown, some studies have shown that some groups of people are more likely to suffer of this condition than the rest. This group includes people who are timid by nature and who tend is to be worried and over concerned about every single problem in their lives. They continuously analize their own abilities and are never sure if they are able to complete their tasks and responsibilities. The signs of their insecurity and fears are usually visible from their early childhood (blushing, sweaty palms, palpitations, not feeling comfortable in front of older, unfamiliar people or in front of the authoritative figures.) Those children spend a lot of time daydreaming and imagining things and have no agonistic spirit and behavior. While sleeping they can also experience dreadful dreams and have accidents with urinating in bed. Their perception of other individuals is kind of naive because they cannot see the hidden intentions of nasty people. Even after repetitive and numerous disappointments they do not modify their behavior.

It is essential to state that panic disorder is very common mental health problem in our society. Although individuals that show some of the previously mentioned symptoms in the early stages of their lives are in greater risk of being affected by panic disorder in their mature years, not everyone will. On the contrary, some very strong individuals that are easygoing and have no apparent difficulties in their lives could be struck by this condition without any warnings or a reasonable explanation.
