Am I an FOB Or Not

FOB (pronounced “fob”, but usually with an exclamation, like “FOB!”) means Fresh Off Boat! It refers to an individual that is new to a country. The origin of the term goes back about more than a century, when European and Asian immigrants landed in America by boat or ship. The term "FOB" is also used in a less offensive way of describing Asian American youths, as well as those in Australia and other countries, that display contemporary East Asian youth cultures. This behavior is part of a new trend of Asian American teens displaying their modern cultural roots rather than conform with Western culture. This helps them carve out an identity for themselves.

Most FOBs are a self-selecting group of enterprising, risk-taking individuals who leave their homeland to pursue some nebulous, unquantifiable opportunity be it in business or for higher studies in a faraway place where they don’t even speak the language. Having a background in a foreign country regardless of birth location, an individual is subject to being called a FOB if he/she does something that is indicative of what FOBs do from that country. And they do take pride in it. Gone are the days when people found it derogatory to be called a FOB. Now it’s a kind of fashion statement. FOBs these days are quite cosmopolitan, with respectable lifestyles, designer wardrobes and fluency in multiple languages.

If you think you posses all the above characteristics and consider yourself a FOB, just go out there and make your presence felt. Make a statement and flaunt your attitude.
