Sometimes called a "lunchtime peel" because it’s over so fast, microdermabrasion, is also referred to as power peel particle resurfacing, Parisian peel, derma-peel, or just plain dermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is a very popular, non-surgical skin-rejuvenation technique that helps repair facial skin from years of exposure to the sun and the effects of aging. A device, like a fine sandblaster, sprays tiny crystals of aluminum dioxide on the face, while a gentle abrasive action scrapes off and suctions away aged, dead skin cells. Microdermabrasion is effective in softening fine lines, and diminishing wrinkles, age spots and acne scars by stimulating the production of new skin cells and collagen. It is especially effective in reducing the age-revealing lines around the eyes known as "crow's feet." There is no pain associated with this facial procedure at all. If anything, there may be slight discomfort around the sensitive tissues of the mouth and nose. The entire procedure takes only 40 to 50 minutes, with no recovery time--and you are left with a skin that has a fresher, more radiant look. The icing on the cake is that for a time your face creams and high-tech skin care products will work more efficiently by being able to penetrate deeper into the layers of the skin. As with other skin rejuvenation methods, more than one treatment may be needed. For best results the number of treatments recommended can range between 5 and 12, allowing two to three weeks in between. After the initial regimen is completed, maintenance treatments should be done on an as needed basis. Once you’ve decided to have it done, make sure the technician is qualified. You certainly don’t need a plastic surgeon to do the procedure, but the person should be well-trained and experienced because results depend somewhat on their expertise. Also, make sure all traces of aluminum dioxide are removed from your skin. If not, it will continue to be abrasive. Apply sunscreen with a high SPF number if you must go in the sun, if not--stay in the shade. Sometimes the results are amazing, and for as little as $100, you can give yourself a new you.
