By: Daniel Beasley

Laser hair removal is important to many people because it removes excess hair from the body and gives people a more attractive appearance. Laser hair removal can be more effective than other methods that have been tried through the ages, such as tweezing, waxing, creams, and electrolysis.

Excess facial hair is a problem for many women. Some actually have to shave the area because the facial hair is that visible. Some women get tired of shaving their underarms and their legs, so laser hair removal can be away to eventually stop the hair growth in those areas.

Many spas and cosmetic dermatology or plastic surgery offices use this treatment as a supplement or alternative to more traditional hair removal techniques. The laser emits a pulsing and intense light beam to the affected area. The doctor will pass the light over the area and as the light goes through the skin it will target the areas that need fixing.

The laser beam looks for the dark pigment in the skin and affects to the hair follicle. The hair follicle is the actual spot where the hair begins and the intense heat from the laser will destroy the follicle. Generally speaking, laser treatment will make hair regrowth slower and you will need to have several treatments before hair disappears completely.

The most popular areas for laser hair removal are the armpits, legs, chin, upper lip, under the chin (for women), and the bikini line. Men often undergo laser hair removal to remove excess hair from the chest and the back. Essentially the laser can be used on any area of the body.

Some people may think that laser hair removal is a way to remove unwanted hair permanently but this is not guaranteed by this process. However, over time permanent hair removal can happen if the person is patient undergoes multiple laser hair removal treatments.

It is very important to make sure that the person doing the procedure is board certified in dermatology or in a similar area and that this is one of their specialties.
