When selecting the cable that you are going to be using for your particular applications it is imperative that you choose the correct cable for optimal efficiency. There are several types of cable to choose from and each type has its own particular applications and specifications, so learning to select the right type of cable for your specific exact needs is imperative for an optimally functioning system. One type of cable commonly known as Category 5e cable is actually an upgraded version of category 5 cable that adds specifications for far end cross talk. In 2001 it was defined formally in the TIA/EIA-568-B standard, however it no longer recognizes the original specification of category 5 cable. Category 5e cable is the perfect choice for use with 1000BASE-T in spit of the fact that 1000BASE-T was originally designed for use with category 5 cable. The reasons for its being the optimal choice in this application is the tighter specs associated with category 5e connectors and cable. In spite of the fact that it Category 5e does have a higher level of performance specifications, it will not allow for greater cable distances for Ethernet networks due to the fact that the cables are still confined to 100 meter lengths. The standard or normal practice however; is to limit horizontal or "fixed" cables to a maximum length of 90 meters, which will allow for 5 meters of patch cable on each end of the fixed cable.
