Long-term Savings Related to Weight Loss Surgery It is difficult to put a price on improved health; however, studies have shown that one year after surgery, patients average a savings of $900 per month on medical bills. These savings alone would average a savings of over $10,000 over a twelve-month period. Insurance and Financing Options Originally insurance companies were resistant to covering the cost of weight loss surgery. However, as the overall health (and money-saving) benefits of bariatric surgery have been recognized, many insurance companies are including at least some coverage for the surgery. It is important to note that insurance companies vary from one another and from state to state. There may also be an extensive screening process to qualify for insurance coverage. Patients should discuss their coverage with their individual insurance carriers. Medicare and state assistance programs may offer funding options for obese patients who do not have medical insurance. Other financing options include a personal loan or cash payment. Whether from an insurance carrier, Medicare, state assistance, or a loan, preapproval for funding typically takes some time and it must be in place before the weight loss surgery is scheduled.
