Bextra is a type of drug known as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIDs). It is also the brand name for the generic drug Valdecoxib. Bextra is known as a cox-2 inhibitor, which is a class of painkillers that are popularly used due to their efficiency in treating arthritis pain and other ailments.The most common side effects of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, Bextra being on of them, concern the gastrointestinal system. Bextra is preliminary being linked to sufferers of heart attacks and strokes.Bextra being in the same class of drugs as Vioxx which was withdrawn after studies showed it was too dangerous is known to also cause Steven Johnson Syndrome (SJS). Bextra was originally used to reduce pain, inflammation, and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis and adult rheumatoid arthritis, and for painful menstruation.According to the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), Bextra is a prescription COX-2 selective, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and is NOT approved for use after surgery in any setting. Bextra is especially not approved for treating pain following heart bypass surgery.Bextra medication is produced and marketed by Pfizer who are themseleves still adamant that Bextra is a safe drug and the FDA might have committed a grave mistake by banning it. Yet after the recent problems with Vioxx, Pfizer's Bextra is facing a bleak future..Recently, the FDA concluded that the overall risk versus benefit profile of Bextra is unfavorable. It is thought that routine monitoring should be performed when therapy with Bextra is either started or ended in patients on anticonvulsant therapy.
