Bigger Government is not more Efficient

By: Lance Winslow

Most Americans would like the government to be smaller and therefore more efficient and agile. Most Americans believe this would help them catch the international terrorist and not allow them to slip through the cracks of bureaucracy. Many groups say that smaller government is beautiful and perhaps that is true? Any large organization will have problems with the efficiency, paperwork and bureaucracy, as there are too many chiefs and not enough Indians.

Luckily, information technologies of the last decade have indeed made our government more efficient in the things that they do and this will increase into the future. Streamlining government systems and making the system perfect should be a major objective of our government to ensure that the taxpayer’s money is not wasted. But at the same time our government's resources should be used to protect the American people, as that is the job of government.

Ronald Reagan would agree that bigger government is less efficient than smaller government and anyone who has ever studied corporations knows that start up corporations are a lot more efficient and agile than large old stodgy bureaucratic corporations. It works the same way in government.

During the last election we have not heard a lot about downsizing or right sizing our government and yet that needs to be a topic of conversation and we do need some national dialogue on the subject. Perhaps you might consider this in 2006.
