Bike Week Rules Change

Whenever you change the rules of a given situation some of those affected will claim to benefit while others will complain. Such is the case with this year’s new rules concerning Daytona’s Bike Week.

The change allows local businesses to begin outside sales one week before Bike Week officially launches on March 3rd.

Some cite the noise and lack of available parking space as factors negatively impacting regular sales. Others say the early opening will provide extra revenue. No outside music will be allowed during the early opening, which should help minimize complaints.

However, there is a growing concern that the Main Street area will become a ghost town of vacant lots which open up only for vending during Bike Week and Biketoberfest. Some feel that the city should do more to incentivize local business year round. The Easyriders store was torn down in early February with plans to provide outside vending for the event. Although there were promises to rebuild on the site, similar promises by others have remained unkept.

It’s an interesting issue which doesn’t have a cut and dried solution. And it’s one not not isolated to Daytona. While many small cities with major events such as Bike Week dislike the temporary influx of tourists into their home towns there is no doubt that these events do benefit the local economy. But is this at the expense of local business owners and residents? Is the increase in security, traffic control, law enforcement, sanitation and medical staffing worth the extra dollars? It would seem that the answer is yes based on the continued popularity of such events. However it’s equally obvious there is more planning, negotiation and discussion required to reach that happy medium for all parties involved.
