Several years ago I asked a computer technician to set up my Website. He did a good job. Then, for reasons I do not understand, some postings on my site moved and changed. I have excellent keyboarding skills and generate copy as fast as any author. When it comes to the Internet, however, I am a klutz, and need help.I asked my technician if he would edit my Website, but he was swamped with work. I asked a graphic designer if she would take on the job, but she had a backlog of orders. Finally, I looked in the phone book and called a Website designer in a near by town. She was willing to clean up my Website and would work from home.To speed the editing process I sent her a precise list of what needed to be done. Your site may need to be updated, too. Do you need a Website designer?INITIAL SITE DESIGN. A Website designer can save you time when it comes to the initial design of your site. Many Websites are electronic resumes. Other Websites are designed to sell. I wanted my Website to be a blend of both. However, I didn't want a "hard sell" site.FONT CHOICE AND POSITION. A Website designer can help you choose a font that transmits clearly. Your goal is to make your site easy to read. I posted a one-page review on my Website. The review was fine for several months and then changed into a long, skinny, column. My Website designer fixed this problem.COLOR CHOICES. As I surf the Internet I am amazed at the background choices people have made, dark purple and black that make reading difficult. Do some research on the psychology of color before you choose the colors for your site. I choose blue, a color that symbolizes stability, and yellow, a color that symbolizes happiness.VIEWER OPTIONS. My Website has a list of options for viewers to choose, but I wanted to add more. The Website designer helped me do this. She also sequenced these options for maximum effectiveness.PHOTOS AND VISUALS. Photos always make a Website more interesting. Book covers and reviews are posted on Website. You may wish to add special features, such as movement and sound.FREE INFORMATION. Book marketing firms say you have to give viewers something for free in order to sell books. Free information is posted on my website. a link to an internet-only radio program I was on, and a link to the ezine articles I have written.Since I continue to write books I know my Website will need editing in the future. I will probably make these changes with the Website designer's help. If you can edit your own site more power to you. Check your site every so often to see if there are any electronic glitches. Most of all, keep your Website up to date.Copyright 2006 by Harriet Hodgson
