1. Know What Type of Book You Want to Write
2. Do a Market comparison
3. Complete a Title Search
4. Create an Outline
5. Write a Query letter
6. Start your Book proposal

Here is step two of my six preparatory steps to complete BEFORE starting your manuscript. Step 2. Do a Market Comparison

Begin by searching the market to see what else is already out there on the subject you plan to write about. If you find that the market is flooded with books on your topic, you will need to decide if the market can bear another similar book.

Take a moment and write down your USP or unique selling position. Outline what is unique about how you will write your book so that it will stand out among the competition. What gives it an edge? If you can’t come up with a USP, your book may not be able to garner much success in the book world. If you decide to go ahead with your idea, you will need to conduct market comparisons to use in your book proposal later on regardless of whether you plan to self-publish or use a commercial publisher.

Where to Gather Marketing Data:

* Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble or Google search for similar titles or use keywords about your story line

* Walk through your local library and take notes about new releases or popular titles featured.

* Visit local Bookstores. Notice what is on the best-seller shelves and end-caps. Who or what are they promoting the most?

Find five books in your genre and pull the following information for your market comparison:

* Title
* ISBN
* Price
* Binding type
* Publication year and place
* A short synopsis of the book (from the back cover)

Save this information in a word processing file. You will need it for your book proposal. Now make sure you read steps 3-6 of this article series posted at http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Yvonne_Perry.
