Budgeting For Your Wedding

By: Eric Hartwell

A wedding is one of the most wonderful things you might have to experience in life. It’s also one of the most expensive. Because weddings are extremely special, couples tend to spend a lot more than they should on this one special day. I’m not saying it’s wrong to spend money for your wedding. I’m just saying that the money you spend on your wedding should be spent wisely.

Steps in Budgeting for your Wedding

First of all, confer with your fiancé about how much should be spent on your wedding. Decide on a reasonable amount which you both agree upon.

Second, make a list of the things you’re going to spend on for your wedding. These things include stationery for your wedding invitations, the bride’s gown, the clothes of the entourage, the groom’s attire, the rings, the reception, the church, the ceremony, flower arrangements, food, the wedding cake, music, photo and video services, and transportation.

Next, decide on the number of guests you’ll be inviting. Make sure that the number is not too big that your budget won’t be able to accommodate it.

After that, get back to your ‘expenses list’. You’ll notice that the ones which will probably take the most out of your budget are ‘ceremony’ and ‘reception’, and maybe even ‘bride’s gown’. For the ceremony and reception, decide which one you consider to be more important. If for you, the ceremony is more important than the reception, then allot a larger portion of your budget to it.

Stay Away from Loans

Also, don’t be too extravagant. Spend within your means and cut costs whenever you can. Avoid getting a loan at all costs. You don’t want to enter into your marriage buried in debt. That would give a deep sense of foreboding to your relationship.

The most effective way to cut costs is to borrow what you can, as long as it’s not money. Instead of buying new jewelry, simply borrow some from other people. You can also borrow other items such as shoes, ring pillows, and other things.

Also, it wouldn’t be wise to have new gowns made. If you can content yourself with just renting your gown, then that would really help your budget. After all, you only wear your wedding gown once and if you have one made, which costs a lot, it would be quite impractical. If you absolutely have to have your gown made at the design that you want, then have it rented by other brides afterwards. This will at least get you back some of the money you spent. The gowns of the entourage should be rented too.

There are other ways to cut costs like buying from wholesalers and choosing simple over extravagant. When planning your wedding, never lose sight of what’s really important. Don’t get carried away. If you spend too much on your wedding, you might end up buried in debt. Remember that the wedding is just the beginning of your life together. You don’t want your marriage to have a bad start so spend wisely.
