Bull Riding Days

By: Jim Gustafson

Somehow, just as I get cruising along, feeling good, thinking things are how they are supposed to be, somebody or something shows up to mess it up. Now, I know this has more to do with me, than with anyone else, but darn it, some people just get me the wrong way? Charles Schultz creator of the Peanuts cartoons once had good ol’ Charlie Brown say, “I love mankind. Its people I can’t stand.” Some days are just like that.

For example, I almost got hit driving to work this morning. She was driving a big SUV and doing her eye make up at the same time. I saw her coming, creeping over into my lane. I had no where to go. The guy behind be was too close for me to hit the breaks. I blasted my horn. She quickly moved back into her lane, waved that I was “number one” with her, and continued to apply her eye liner. My day started with a less than joyful attitude toward those with whom I share the planet.

Some years ago, Alyce Selby wrote a little book titled Take Your Hands Off My Attitude. The point of her book was that we have no right or authority over anybody’s attitude. So, telling an employee that they have a “bad attitude,” is a waste of time. We can instruct people to do specific things, but we cannot demand that they have a certain attitude. We can insist that customers be greeted with a smile, but we cannot insist that the greeter be happy.

Sometimes managing attitude is difficult. It is easy to surrender control and allow someone to dim the sunshine. I think the measure of maturity may be the narrowing of the time between the interruption and the recovery. J.W. Hart is a rodeo star. He rides bucking bulls. J.W. says that just when he thinks he has all bulls figured out, he’ll “draw a new one that will swerve and leap and have you holding on with everything you got.”

I think attitudes are like bulls. You can hang on to happy, but somewhere along the way you’re going fall off. The secret is how fast can you get back on and ride….. Yahooo.
