A patient came to see me once complaining of excessive eczema and dermatitis on her body. After listening to her story and examining her, I asked her, if anything, she had done to try and help this difficult and distressing situation. She told me that she had bought lots of different preparations over the counter and from the local herbal shop. She had been advised by the herbalist that there are a number of things that might help. As time went on, she recounted, and as one product did not help over another, she bought more and more products to help this condition. I asked her to bring in the products and preparations with her the next time she came to see me.The following week she came to see me and brought in a large carrier bag full of different preparations. I counted at least 20. Many of these preparations were not ones that one would have expected to take for such a condition and a number of them were, at best, ill advised. More than this, many of the preparations cost her a lot of money and, although she was willing to pay for these, she did herself a disservice by continually buying medications that are unlikely to help and, sometimes, might cause her harm. The moral of this tale is to ensure that if people are buying herbal remedies are being advised by herbalist, that they should at least have some knowledge of the underlying preparations concerned and what they might do to help the condition and what, if anything, might make the condition worse.
