Robert Maxwell has certainly become known for the wrong reasons rather than the right. A larger than life character, he got a reputation for everything that may be considered negative in a person. he was rude, greedy and subversive.He was born in 1923 and became, initially, a politician. Having been judged to be an unfit person to be “relied upon to exercise proper stewardship of a public quota company” in 1971 (in retrospect, a warning of things to come), he started up a failing printing company.Soon he developed a printing empire which encompassed the Mirror, the New York Daily News, and the American publishing house MacMillan. Unfortunately he was a law unto himself and often bullied his employees -- even the senior ones. There are many stories of his shock and power tactics in relation to his employees and how he would treat them with distain and contempt. He had a poor view of his readers and also his staff. He made even those in senior positions cower before him.He was a large, loud, and gluttonous man who often ate huge amounts of food; and cleaners often remarked that the remains of several chickens were strewn around the office floor after one of his impressive nights of eating.His main legacy -- he died in 1991 -- was to rob the Mirror employees of their pension fund. This was to shore up his ailing empire.He died in 1991 in very mysterious circumstances whilst cruising on a boat off the Canary Islands. He had a lust for money and for power.
