While he has been suspended by the NFL for four weeks, San Diego Chargers star outside linebacker Shawne Merriman denies having used any form of steroid claiming that he is a victim of the NFL drug testing policy. Merriman blamed a tainted supplement after he has been tested positive for the Nandrolone steroid. He will be able to return on the field with the Chargers on Nov. 27.The second-year veteran, who is also tying for the league’s lead with 8.5 sacks, decided to make an appeal to the NFL’s decision on Tuesday. Merriman could have to go to a league’s hearing on Nov. 7, allowing him to play in Sunday's home game against the Browns. But he estimated that his chances of winning the appeal would be too slim since the players are held responsible for the supplements that they take. Because of his suspension, Merriman will miss important games against the Browns game, road games against Cincinnati and Denver, and a home game against Oakland. If he had made an appeal and lost it, he might have been forced to miss two more additional games against Denver, which shares the AFC West lead with the Chargers at 5-2.Merriman just started his pro-bowl career and has been elected the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year. Merriman refused to disclose the name of the supplement that led to the positive test explaining he is planning to sue the manufacturer. He explained that it is only an over-the-counter supplement. He was the same supplement for 1.5 years. He always came clean after three consecutive drug tests. But he has been tested positive on Aug. 2nd. Merriman explained that he was taking this supplement to restore his energy during the off-season when he was working out two or three times a day.The Chargers had already had to deal with five distinct run-ins with the law since April. The last incident involved outside linebacker Steve Foley who has been shot three times by an off-duty police officer on Sept. 3rd. Foley is out for the season. Merriman will be replaced on the roster by Carlos Polk. He missed most of the last two seasons because of several injuries.
