Consumer Beware: Your PC and Spyware

By: Holly Bentz

How does spyware work?

Popular, malicious and intrusive, spyware is synonymous with debilitating Internet software. It’s the type of malevolent programming that is futile to the victim but has the ability to creep into a computer’s operating system. Without the end-user’s consent, spyware commits a host of invasions and attacks:
• Intercepts, collects and monitors personal information
• Alters computer settings
• Corrupts performance
• Bears unsolicited ads
These computer modifications run the gamut from minor to detrimental. For instance, certain spyware is designed to configure a new search page or even a new home page. But other “malware” (a type of spyware) can add new components that either slowdown or crash a system. Not to mention, these annoying spying agents make it virtually impossible to reset a PC to its original configurations.
What are the telltale signs of spyware on an operating system?
There are five telltale signs that spyware may be installed on your computer:
>> A new toolbar (that you never downloaded) appears in your browser. Regardless of how many times you try to remove it, the toolbar never goes away.
>> Your PC or computer is abnormally slow and it requires more time to initiate certain tasks.
>> Your system is impetuously crashing on a regular basis
>> Pop-up advertisements randomly appear on your desktop when you' are not even online.
>> The homepage settings of your browser have been modified.

How does spyware find its way on computers?
There are a myriad of ways for spyware, malware and adware to invade computers. One of the oldest and most popular ways for end-users to acquire spyware is via the covert installation of spyware. Let’s say that you download shareware, music or a video file, it could be tainted with spyware, malware or adware.

Smart Spyware Tactic: Prior to the installation of new software or the download of a free file, thoroughly review the disclosures outlined in the license agreement. Quite often, the “Term of Service” or “privacy policy” document details about the inclusion of unwanted software (spyware, adware and malware).
