Creating An English As A Foreign Language Teaching Care Package

By: Larry M. Lynch

If you can arrange to get your TEFL certification in the USA, Canada or the UK before going abroad, you'll be able to work in most foreign countries almost as soon as you get there since the schools will be contacted by you or your certifying institution when you successfully complete your CELTA or TEFL certificate course. The certifying institution will also provide you with letters of reference and an invaluable list of referrals to further smooth your way into your first English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching position.

Also, doing a CELTA or TESOL certifying course in the US, Canada or UK will allow you to assemble a good “CARE” package of English-language materials to take with you when you leave the country. In most countries the selection of available English language materials can be anywhere from abysmal to truly sparse. For example, there are no English language newspapers in Colombia, the country where I now teach.

Some highly useful English language materials that will seem a godsend once you begin teaching EFL on foreign soil include most, if not all, of the following resources.

• Maps - include city street maps, state and tourist site maps

• Brochures - these serve well for business English classes

• Flyers - these contain useful slogans, expressions and vocabulary

• classified ads – a priceless resource with a myriad of uses

• postcards – remember, your hometown is an “exotic location”

• tourist info – contains facts, figures and interesting tidbits

• catalogues – another great source of teaching support materials

• CD ROMs – if you’re interested in it they’ll be too

• Videos – in English with NO subtitles in the foreign language

• recordings of local radio and TV stations – you’ll use these for years, without a doubt. I’m still teaching from 1993 TV videos

• board games – interesting and fun for all ages of learners

• puzzles – buy ‘em at a dollar store, use ‘em forever

• magazines – locally-focused ones will be impossible to get abroad

• music – bring your favorites, children's songs, and lots of them too

• movies – DVD is becoming the media of choice, no “pirated” DVDs please

• pictures – clippings from newspapers will do you over and over

• comic strips – clip your favorites and make a large collection

• photos – of family, friends, local events – you name it, they'll love it

• audio cassettes – these are virtually unheard of in many foreign countries …

… and a “Mongolian horde” of other authentic English language and cultural materials, which are mere child's play to get anywhere in an English-language-speaking (L1) country like the US, Canada or the UK, are only a distant dream in many overseas locales. The local free public library in "Jerkwater, USA" is often several light years ahead of anything you'd find even in some of the largest foreign cities.

I hope this helps those of you who are considering teaching English as a foreign language in Colombia or any other foreign country. Please let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.
