Critical Goal Categories Keep You Focused

Plans make the future happen, developing a well thought out plan will help you to identify what needs to happen next to ensure your success. Identifying critical goal categories, those few things that must happen, must be in place to achieve your mission is the first step in this process. Critical goal categories serve as the foundation for implementing your plans, they focus on building upon your strengths and identifying and overcoming the limitations that your may be experiencing. Vision without plans is nothing more then a dream, or as the old adage says; If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

Critical Goal Categories, What they Look Like

Critical goal categories need to be specific to your business, and the market segments you are focusing on, they must consider your structure, resources, trends and strengths relative to your competition. Additionally they must be necessary and adequate, that is to say is each critical goal really necessary or could you do without it and adequate in that if they are realized will you accomplish your goal? Typically you should develop between four to seven critical goal categories, more then seven may lead to deploying resources which focus on the trivial many, instead of the critical few.

  • Cash Flow
  • New Market penetration
  • Clients / Customers
  • New Products / Services
  • Staffing / manpower
  • Cost


People without goals, have no direction and they are almost always very busy, but seldom achieve what they want. However people who experience high levels of achievement and success are almost always people who have clearly defined goals.
