Many people claim to be excellent debaters and they know their information very well, however they know it from a limited skew and their own personal perception. If one really wants to debate a topic then one should be able to also debate it from the opponent's point of view; or the exact opposite or even a third or fourth perspective. Think of the last time you were in a political or verbal debate and ask yourself do you understand the other party's concerns and perceptions well enough to argue their point for them.Often something I find in debating public policy, new innovations or business strategies is that I understand the other person's point of view, but am rather disappointed in their ability to deliver their message. In fact, I feel like giving them notes on how to debate their own point of view because they do not give much of a challenge and thus it is really no fun and I didn't learn anything new.If you are a good debater or well-versed in any subject then you should already know all the points of contention of the other side. You should know them so well that you can switch sides at the debate table and give yourself a good run for your own money. Until you can do that you really don't understand the debate and therefore you do an injustice to your own side or perspective.I certainly hope this article is of interest and that is has propelled thought.
