Many websites are striving to promote legal downloading of music, and have a burning desire to stop piracy. These sites also acts as a forums for artists’ to voice their opinions on downloading music and prompts music makers and music lovers to help shape an exciting future for digital music. Nevertheless, there’s more to just debates and legal issues as far as downloading of music over the Internet is concerned.

So why is there so much noise about downloading music from the Internet? This is a very important question and demands a simple answer. Unfortunately, the answer is not as simple. Where-ever you go you’ll find people talking, having discussion about this. It’s, definitely, a hot topic! No matter what you hear, one thing is for sure: everyone is confused. While some can’t stop themselves from downloading music online, others are completely against this practice. The record labels are on a constant vigil. They are suing people who are downloading music and get caught. The reality is that technology has defeated us; we no longer know for sure, how to prevent this practice.

Let’s try to get a better insight about this scenario. Let’s try to find out where we, actually, stand. It would not be wrong to suggest that, the main ‘culprit’ responsible for the intense popularity of this trend is the introduction of the MP3 format. Using MP3 technology, music files become very small in size and allow you to download your favorite music in minutes, rather than hours. Also, due their compressed sizes lots of music files in MP3 format can be stored on your computer. The advancement in technology has further allowed for these files to be played on portable MP3 players and even mobile phones.

Music downloaded from a legitimate site is perfectly normal and legal. However, when you swap or download music from non-licensed or unauthorized websites, also known as P2P (Peer2Peer), or burn music on CDs and give them to your friends or sell them, then your actions warrant legal action! Many governing bodies have joined hands to cut down these illegal practices and prevent piracy of music, which leads to millions of dollars of losses for record companies and artists. These bodies argue, and the law agrees, that downloading and exchanging MP3 files without permission is akin to stealing CDs from a music store, and hence punishable. They aim to encourage you and all music lovers across the world to obtain music without tampering with the copyright laws.

Therefore next time when you crave for downloading an MP3 of your favorite artist, remember to use a legitimate site for this purpose. Play your part in this fight to prevent illegal download of music over the internet, now!
