Duke is Still Coach Less

By: Cindy Ferguson

The person who takes the position must represent Duke at civic, charity and alumni events.

Although athletic director Joe Alleva states there is nothing in the job requirements stating the new coach's most important task is to win games and bring success to the team.

Nonetheless Alleva has stated his desire to contract someone that has coached in the Bowl Subdivision but the job listing says prior college football coaching experience is required. According to the listing, it's alright if the applicant has "an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience."

The Blue Devils have only managed to win 22 games in 13 years and have even gone up to 15 games consecutively without winning. For the past three seasons; Duke finished with at least ten defeats and have been placed as one of the worst programs in the Bowl Subdivision.

The job requirements were posted to abide the universities regulations which require all vacant and approved listings to be posted on the school’s employment website for a minimum of seven days. Duke is not the only school to advertise their job position this way. North Carolina uses the same method for many openings and did the same last season when they were searching for a coach.

So far no information has been released as to if anyone has applied and the search for a new coach has been kept private as a private matter. He has not made not one single comment on the situation nor its progress since the search initiated over two weeks ago.

Anonymous sources informed The Associated Press that Tennessee’s volunteer offensive coordinator and former Mississippi Rebels coach David Cutcliffe had an interview for the job last Wednesday. The source was kept secret due to the confidential nature of the matter and Cutcliffe's agent, Jimmy Sexton, did not wish to make any comments regarding the issue.

Additional information which was revealed is that Alleva interviewed two other candidates but they were removed from consideration due to their own decisions. Such candidates were: ex-Navy Coach Paul Johnson who chose to take over Georgia Tech, and Bobby Johnson who decided to stay at Vanderbilt.
