Watching the NBA Eastern Conference Finals was a great lesson for me. Beside the excitement and the show of talent, I watched in awe as Heats star Dwayne Wade made miraculous contributions to a major victory in the history of the Miami Heat's participation in the NBA and in that process Wade wrote his own name in the NBA history books. Dwayne Wade was hospitalized on the very day of this match, being sick with flu. Sports Illustrated reports that Wade spent “half-time and the first three minutes of the second half tethered to an IV”. However, this obstacle will not stop the young dynamic star from doing his best in spite of his sickness; he was described as dehydrated earlier that day but whilst I (and some match commentators) were wondering whether Wade would be effective in the game or even play to the end, he was WHITE HOT with energy and he persevered to the very end, scoring of “10 points in less than 9 minutes”. Sports illustrated craftily described Dwayne Wade’s rise against his obstacle this way: sniffling and sweating as he took the court, he conjured in the assembled, white-garbed masses romantic visions of Michael Jordan and his flu-racked 38-point performance in Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals. But for anyone acquainted with Wade’s coming of age in the game of basketball he was living his own words as he once described his childhood basketball games against his Dad it was rough and there were a lot of bruises but you got to do what you got to do to win What did he gain? The answer: Victory! Dwayne Wade’s team, the Miami Heat won the 2006 NBA Eastern Conference finals and more; the Heat also qualified for the NBA Finals for the first time. And that’s not the end of the story. Dwayne Wade became the first 2003 NBA draft to go to the NBA finals. What a lesson! In his story can be found the great lesson of PERSEVERANCE, a quality that every one who enjoys enduring success must possess. It is the quintessential quality that powers the human machine. In the words of Orison Swett Marden, perseverance is to talent what steam is to the engine. Wade has demonstrated Alistair Cooke’s enlightening statement A professional is a person who can do his best at a time when he does not particularly feel like it and further showed me the meaning of John Quincy Adams’ words Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish So Dwayne Wade has this indispensable quality of perseverance and its already working its wonders for him. His journey of perseverance to success is also echoed by his team mate Shaquille O’Neal's words. Talking of Wade Shaq says that whilst others have enjoyed much support in the form of publicity to get where they are, not so Dwayne. Says Shaq: He earned it. He’s the true definition of a superstar! Whatever your calling and whatever obstacles that may come your way, you CAN succeed if you persevere. Just Surge ahead in search of your dreams, your goals. With perseverance victory will come your way one day.
