Eagles: Free Agent CB Peterson to Sign

By: Nigel Kerry

The Philadelphia Eagles managed to clinch an agreement in principle with free agent cornerback Will Peterson. Peterson was considered as one of the NFL's emerging young cornerbacks.

But his career has been stopped because of back problem. He has not played in a game in nearly 14 months. Peterson was left without club after New York Giants released him early this spring.

However Peterson has to undergo a series of physical exam before signing a proper contract which could run through the balance of this season. If the exam are good and Peterson can play, it will give a great opportunity to the cornerback to demonstrate to teams that he has totally recovered and can play at his maximum, thus allowing to go into the unrestricted free agent market in the next spring.

Peterson, 27, spent several months of treatments and rehabilitation. Eventually he has been allowed by specialists at the end of September to return to the football field. Since he has been cleared was auditioning for teams. Then several teams have shown their interest in hiring Peterson, a physical cornerback with good coverage skills. Philadelphia was even more interested since the team has suffered through injuries in the secondary.

Peterson was a third-round pick of the Giants in the 2001 draft. But Peterson was not able to play for 11 games in 2003 after suffering a stress fracture to the right transverse process, a small bone in the lower back. He successfully returned to training camps the following summer. The Giants eager to keep him even sign him to a five-year, $27 million contract extension. Peterson played outstandingly in all 16 games the next season in 2004.

Unfortunately last season, he has been bothered by his back problems since the training camps. Then his problems worsened early in the season, and eventually forced Peterson onto injured reserve. He has been diagnosed with an old displaced fracture also called hot spots, an auguring of a potential stress fracture to the left transverse process. This injury was different from the one he had in 2003 injury, since this one was not a full-blown fracture. Worse Peterson could not undergo surgery to fix it because it could have ended his career. His recovery could only be achieved through rehabilitation and hard work. Finally he made his back stronger now, and feels prepared to resume his career.
