Cultures vary. In the U. S. children grow up learning that it is impolite to be late. Adults who are on time or early are rewarded by approval and admiration. Adults who are late are thought to be inconsiderate of the needs of others and are looked down upon. In other cultures; those of Italy and Mexico for example, the opposite is true because children grow up learning that being early puts the host at a disadvantage and being late gives him time to get ready. The U. S. (except maybe for some of the southern states) is uptight, Italy and Mexico are relaxed. In Indonesia tardiness is called ‘rubber time.’ It is usual to be late, even for business meetings. The boss should be on time because, however late he shows up, the employees will make an effort to be later.A healthy person in either kind of society is relaxed about time but fits in comfortably with the prevailing attitude and is not anxious about it. Those who are compulsively early or incurably late both are anxious about time and those anxieties are commonly called neuroses, if extreme; compulsions. Neuroses come from experiences, usually when young, which program a person to conform to standards preferred by those more powerful and those who wish to climb the ladder of social success and financial glory.Psychotherapy, pop remedies, hypnosis, yoga, drugs and many other approaches make efforts to rid us of our anxieties, not without some success. But mostly we have to accept the fact that we benefit most by finding a way to fit in into our society and being considerate of others, no matter how absurd it may seem to us. Like eating wriggling worms where that is the norm. Sorry I said that. Snails anyone? Jellied eels?
