Ebay Changes Rules to Increase User Satisfaction

By: Eric Hartwell

The growth of eBay has witnessed an increase in auction fraud. Sellers and buyers have had bad experiences and eBay, at last, are making further attempts to put a stop to some of these. There has been not only an increase in bad buyer experiences but also a rise in consumer expectations, fuelling this latest drive.

Trust is a major issue on eBay. Where, in the past, buyers and sellers could trust each other (within certain limits) there is now a growing culture of dishonesty and fraud. Members could hide behind the anonymity of the internet. But no more, as eBay introduces new measures. No longer will members be able to keep their feedback private meaning that the worst offenders will be able to know what experiences others have had.

In some circumstances, bidders will be able to hide their member ID to protect against fraud. Sellers will no longer be able to easily sell fake items (which the buyer thinks are genuine). This practice is not only illegal but also deceives the buyer. Additional verification methods will be used to safeguard buyers.

The charging of excess postage (to minimise eBay charges and increase seller profit) will be curtailed as will the process whereby sellers lie about their whereabouts, of the location of their items. Additionally, there will be new registration requirements for sellers who want to sell in a different country.

Ebay will also increase the protection that buyers have when things go wrong with the trade of certain products. More and more items will be covered by this process in an attempt to combat growing dissatisfaction.

Many people will state that these changes represent too little, too late, especially the buyers and sellers that have had very negative experiences on eBay in the past. But eBay recognise their vulnerabilities and are continuing to recognise and act upon the collective clout of both buyers and sellers and are trying to make the experiences, for both groups, more satisfactory.
