Effects Of Stress On The Body

By: Andrew John

Stress is bad for health. It does bring much more than just mild emotional problems, it affects the body, too. We have to learn how to deal with it unless we want to let it ruin our health.

Basically, stress causes our body to switch to "fight or run" protocol. Our heart beats faster, we increase the number of breaths per minutes letting more oxygen into the lungs, blood is diverted into the muscles and brain and all secondary body functions are slowed down. The digestive system, for example, is put on hold and we cease to be hungry. Dryness of mouth caused by directing the blood to other, more important organs and cause troubles with talking.

The damages stress can do to both mind and the body are very serious. Stomach cramps, risk of a heart stroke and insomnia are only a few examples of what stress can do to your body. If you add to that the risk of severe depression (and certainty of a mild depression), feeling of loneliness and tendency to avoid other people, it clear that we have to get rid of the stress as soon as possible. Otherwise the risk both to our health and to our social life is too high to be ignored.

The body and mind are not the only things that can be destroyed by stress. Your family and social life are also in danger. As stress increases one's aggression level and decrease the tendency to cooperate with others, it poses a serious threat to one's family. People living under stress often get furious for little or no reason and unsurprisingly it is the family and friends who will suffer most. Living with a person suffering from stress-induced problems requires a great deal of understanding.
