Email List Marketing - Nichefying Your Existing List

There are several specific ways that you can nichefy your existing list. The first, one I have already discussed, is simply asking your list what their wants and needs are, and then begin to meet specifically those needs. Now one thing that will happen is that some people will unsubscribe from your list as your offerings become more tightly themed, but the increased revenue from the subscribers who stay on your list should eclipse the lost revenue from the ones who drop from your list. Do not be overly concerned with the ones that leave your list; be more concerned that you are streamlining your list so that it makes you more money. Remember what you are in this business for, and constantly measure what you are doing against that goal.

The second way that you can nichefy your existing list is to send out a free gift to your list, one that would only appeal to subscribers that already belong in the tighter niche. So for example, with the pet products example, you could send out a free gift titled “How to Train Your Dog to Sit in 10 Minutes Flat”. Now, for the most part, the only people who are going to download that manual are going to be people who have dogs, not cats or goldfish, etc.

Now, when they click to download that gift, set up an autoresponder page so that in order to download the manual, they have to opt in to your dog-lovers list. Now, you will be building a list of dog-lovers specifically. You can also take the additional step of removing them from the general list, or you set up your autoresponder so that it excludes them from receiving your general offerings if they are on the tight niche list. How you structure that will probably depend a lot on how your autoresponder works; you can email your autoresponder company and find out the best way to separate the niche mailings from the general mailings. You certainly don’t want this new niche list to start receiving multiple emails because they are on multiple lists; if you are not careful with that you will get unsubscribes and lower open and response rates.
