Humans need—physical, emotional and spiritual—nourishment to thrive. The majority of people need healing in all three. When humans are emotionally malnourished—a.k.a. unmet self-esteem needs, they do things to compensate. The majority of people have emotional malnutrition, but few are conscious of this seemingly innocuous deprivation. The six most frequent compensations for emotional malnutrition are:• Caretaking: Do you find yourself taking care of everyone else as a way of feeling better about yourself?• Doormat: Do you find yourself accepting abuse in a relationship because you believe you don’t deserve anything better?• Envy: Do you find yourself willing to settle for the envy of others because you don’t feel like you deserve their love (i.e. bragging about your children’s accomplishments, name dropping, etc.)?• Self-Absorption: Do you seldom listen to what others are saying unless it directly refers to you? Do you become irritated and bored when the conversation moves to another topic?• One-up: Do you view every situation as a potential opportunity for competition where you can prove something to someone or ‘keep count?’• Subtle One-up: Instead of seeking ways to establish direct connection or communication with another, do you think of how to promote yourself in ways that are subtle enough so that your need for self-importance won’t be discovered. If you answered ‘yes’ to one of these questions, your self-esteem needs some nourishment. If you answered ‘yes’ to two or more of these questions, your self-esteem is in grave need of nourishment.
