Encourage Students to Write

By: Sharon White

However, any technique that a teacher would choose to improve students learning results is inevitably a part of the commonly accepted study methods: reading, writing, speaking. All of the three techniques are vital for study success, however not all of them can be applied in the same amount and value. The each study technique preference depends on a few things: the topic to be learnt; the grade to be achieved and the interaction to be established between a teacher and students.

While reading technique is often applied for students’ self-study writing and speaking should be applied for class work as much as possible. Many teachers do not value writing as useful tool for class study and they prefer to assign writing papers for students’ home work. However, writing in class can be a very useful tool to get better results in teaching.

First, writing in class for many students can be considered as a non-standard task which helps to avoid routine. Ordinarily students are used to write assignments at their homes or tests during exams. Home assignments and tests do not offer freedom in writing, they require definite standards and answers. Moreover, home assignments and tests require correct grammar and spelling so that students often focus on grammar and spelling rules rather than writing itself. Writing tasks offered during class study do not require ordinary standards and students may be free in choosing the writing topic and writing with grammar and spelling errors. Here writing topics can only be suggested by teachers and students are free to refuse them and write on suggesting their own ideas.

In order to motivate students to write on interesting topics which can be discussed later their ready writings should not be handled in for marking by a teacher. Students can mark their writings themselves! Ask students to give their writings to their classmates and take the writings done by other students. Then give them a few minutes to read and evaluate the others’ writings and prepare a brief report. Each report should be introduced in class and marked by the rest of the students. A teacher can agree with the mark or start arguing if he/she seems to disagree with it. Discussion initiated by a teacher should be constructed so that to encourage students defend the mark given by them and prove its fairness.

Thus, class writings with free topics and open discussions can help students develop not only writing but analytical, oratorical and judging skills as well. Teachers should not be afraid of changing their roles with students. Allow your students feel how hard your teacher’s job is!
