First Date Tips

By: Preetu Misra

It seems like ages, ever since you’ve been waiting for this day to come. Your dream boy/ girl has finally to go on a date with you, and you are most expectedly, nervous and confused. Wondering where to go? What to wear? What to talk on… Right? Come let’s talk all about a first date preparation.

The first thing to remember always is that your first date is a beginning of a new relationship. It is an opportunity for both individuals to know each other better. Lets just quickly run through a few tips on what to do on a date, before elaborating on them.

1) Be on Time
2) Be Attentive
3) Be Friendly
4) Be Polite
5) Be Yourself

Once your dream date has agreed to go out with you, the next thought in mind is where to go on the special day. It is advisable not to go to a very private place, and at the same time do not opt for any place that is too crowed either. Since it is the first time you two are meeting, it is obvious that you would not be too comfortable at a private or a too busy place.

A first date usually is not too long; it would be a couple of hours only. Thus both of you need to make the best out of the time you have in hand. You need to talk and share thoughts in order to know each other better. Therefore, select an appropriate hangout place. A coffee outlet, a restaurant or an open area could be good options. Do not opt to take your date for a movie, since you would not be able to talk there. But yes, if you have a good amount of time in hand, and are both movie buffs, you could always catch on a movie followed by a cup of coffee or may be a dinner/ lunch accordingly. The only thing that could ruin your special date would be an unplanned outing. Nothing would be worse than meeting and then wasting time on what to do and where to go. Thus, always plan beforehand, on where you are going and how much time you have together.

The first rule of a date is - Do not be late. It is not only embarrassing, but also insulting to keep someone waiting for you. Nothing is lost if you are a good thirty minutes early for your date, but it is absolutely not accepted to keep anyone waiting for you.

Rule two says, do not over dress. It is very natural that you wish to look the best on your first date, but then again this does not mean that you have to sport a formal suit and tie always. Select your attire according to the meeting place and time. Wearing a blazer in the steaming sun of an open garden should be the last thing on your mind. There is no rule, which says that you cannot wear casuals or formals on a date. Dress to make an impression, but remember to be comfortable. If skirts make you feel conscious and you fidget to pull it down every time, do not wear them. Your dressing should not hinder the pleasure of your first date.

It’s now turn to crack a conversation between the two of you. It’s your first date, thus, hesitation and shyness is very obvious. But the trick lies here, talk on subjects of mutual interest, discuss topics, this will help both of you open up, exchange ideas and thoughts. Remember not to brag too long on any one particular topic or impose your opinion on your partner. Be attentive, understanding and polite. Be careful not to get too personal in your conversation. Give space to others and make him/ her feel at ease.

One last thing that you need to remember while going on your first date is not to go out of your way in doing anything. This does not mean that you will become selfish and rude, but it is very important to be yourself. It should not be that there is a sea change in your mannerism from one date to another.

And, yes following up is important too. After the date is over, it is always nice to get a call from the other side to enquire about him/ her. Ask how they felt, and did they enjoy your company. Tell them how you felt on the date, and do drop in hints of meeting again soon, provided both of you intend to move ahead.
